Cualquier instalación residencial, comercial e industrial en la cual exista algún tipo de motores eléctricos (bombas de agua, elevadores, compresores, etc.), pueden presentar necesidades de contar con bancos de capacitores para corregir el factor de potencia y evitar las penalizaciones. El factor de potencia es el indicador utilizado para medir la eficiencia eléctrica, siendo el valor de: 1 (100%) el óptimo. Cuando el indicador de potencia posee el valor de 1 significa que toda la energía se convierte en trabajo. Si el factor de potencia es menor a 0.9 las empresas distribuidoras de energía eléctrica aplican penalizaciones (multas) las cuales se especifican dentro de los recibos de energía eléctrica bajo el concepto de "Penalización por Incumplimiento NTSD".
